Abondance doves: wooden sculptures and traditional savoir
faire
He chose the best bits of wood at
the beginning of autumn before the first snowfall. In his hands the pine begins
to take shape, becoming life-like. Abondance doves are one of this valley’s
traditions, bringing happiness and prosperity to each home.
Benoît
Folliet and Charles Girard Berthet welcome visitors to their workshop where they
talk about their love for woodwork. Further information available from the
Abondance tourist office.
Jérôme Phalippou’s passion knows no boundaries
Jérôme Phalippou sketches in an attempt to retrace the
history of the Abondance valley as well as that of his profession: customs
officer. In his illustrations he mixes historical accuracy with mischievous
humour, bringing to life posters about events in the Chablais, and in particular
Abondance, where his works of art have become a collector’s item. Jérôme
Phalippou’s posters and other works are on sale in the
Abondance Tourist Office and newsagents in winter like in
summer. Check out his work at: www.minisapiens.com , http://www.editions-astronome.com
Local inhabitants
from both the valley and the village have managed to preserve and hand down
their savoir faire and traditions, so much a part of their identity. From the
tiler laying his wooden slats to the baker, not forgetting the dove sculptor, we
invite you to share these traditions with us whilst on holiday here, and during
the various events, such as the Christmas
market.
