Discover and visit a unique cultural heritage site in the Haute-Savoie
…where Art, History and Culture become one…
The abbey of Abondance is situated in the heart of the mountains, in the Pre-Alps of the Chablais region, between Lake Geneva and the Swiss border.

In 1875, the abbey was the first building in Haute Savoie to be classified as a Historical Monument.

In 2003, the Ministry of Culture and Communication designated the Abondance Valley a Pays d’art et d’histoire (an area of historical and artistic importance) with the abbey as its principal site. The abbey church, its cloister and convent buildings still stand today.

The abbey was founded in the 12th century by Augustian Canons and is witness to the power of the Gothic architecture of this mountain region. It contains magnificent artistic treasures. Highly recommended are: the 15th century frescoes in the cloister, the recently restored 19th century trompe l’oeil paintings in the abbey church and the exhibition, “From History to Art: the Religious Heritage of the valley of Abondance,” in the old monastery buildings.

You will be welcomed by the abbey’s staff and discover the rich cultural heritage of the abbey thanks to the many activities on offer.
